Ocean Resin Board DIY

Ocean Resin Board DIYfeatured

Ocean Resin Art is so beautiful and brings back memories of amazing beach vacations of the past. The feel of sand between your toes, the smell of fresh crisp air and the sound of ocean waves crashing all come flooding back to memory when looking at ocean resin art.

Resin is not hard to work with but does require patience and prep work. I also learned while working with resin that where you leave it on a project, is not necessarily where it stays. Meaning that resin goes where you least expect it and thats because of its curing time and thin viscosity.

On this project I used a cutting board that I purchased from a home decor store and Unicone Art high quality clear casting epoxy resin. I chose this brand because of its non- toxic, crystal clear, anti-yellowing qualities and the easy 1:1 mix ratio.

There is a 30 minute work time with this epoxy resin and it is 98% cured after 24 hours and fully cured within 72 hours.

Overall I loved this project and ended up making more boards in the process. Resin is fun to work with and brings out the artist in you. Resin art projects are unique because no two pieces will be exactly the same.

Let's get your beach vibes going with this Ocean Resin Art Board Project.

Supplies

  1. Cutting board
  2. Clear Casting Epoxy Resin
  3. Painters tape
  4. Xacto knife
  5. Measuring cups
  6. Stir sticks
  7. Heat gun or hair dryer
  8. Acrylic Paint in Navy, Blue and Light Blue
  9. Ocean Mica Powder Bundle
  10. Ocean White Pigment

Instructions

  1. Clean cutting board and make sure it is completely dry and free of lint or dust particles.
  2. Place the board face down and apply painters tape to the back of the board on all sides and corners.
  3. Using the Xacto knife cut the edges of the painters tape that are sticking out from the board so that the tape lays smoothing down on the board avoiding any bunched up pieces of tape.
  4. Flip the board over and start painting your design with the Navy, Blue and Light Blue acrylic paint. The resin will spread over and beyond the paint so pay more attention to painting the edges of the board that will be covered by resin to obtain full coverage and deeper color.
  5. Once the paint is completely dry without any damp spots start mixing your epoxy. This is a 1:1 ratio epoxy. I mixed a total of 4 oz (mix per epoxy instructions). Once the epoxy was mixed I divided it into 4 individual cups saved alittle clear epoxy in the original measuring cup for creating the ocean cells. Place about a 1/2 tsp of mic powder in each cup and mix.
  6. The board should be placed on a riser up off the table so that the resin can run off the piece. Again make sure your board is free of lint or dust and start pouring your ocean blue epoxy on the board covering the paint and edges of the board. Save the white for last. See picture.
  7. Remember the epoxy has a thin viscosity so it will spread and migrate to different areas so don't be too rigid about where the epoxy goes.
  8. Once the blue resins are down and all the paint is covered do a thin coat of clear resin and pour the white resin on top.
  9. Using a hair dryer or heat gun on low heat setting blow the white resin towards the blue resin this will create waves and cells.
  10. When you have achieved the look you want double check the edges of the board to make sure they are covered with resin and without holes or gaps in coverage and no paint is showing.
  11. Let sit in a lint/dust free environment for at least 24 hours.
  12. Once the epoxy is cured use the heat gun slightly heat up the epoxy to remove the painters tape on the back of the board. This will give you a clean edge.

Again I really enjoyed this project and it was instantly pleasing and will give beach vibes year round. This board can be used to display food or cheeses and can be used as a cutting board. Be careful with the epoxy when using a knife as this will leave markings and possibly chip the epoxy. Acidic foods can cause blemishes and dull spots on epoxy so wipe clean quickly when this project is exposed to such foods.

Check out the final product and other boards I made. Let me know how this project turns out for you. You got this.
