Marble & Gold Decorative Tray

Y'all!

It's the marble and gold for me. I was strolling through our local tile and granite store for a bathroom remodel and found this beautiful piece of marble. Although I was not going to use this for the client's bathroom, I just had to take this piece home with me. I love that it has tones of blue and gold swirling through it.

This decorative tray can be used in the kitchen, living room, bedroom or even on your vanity. It can also be sized to the measurements that you need for your space. The wonderful thing about going to your local tile and granite store is that you have a wide selection of marble pieces in varying sizes.

I am so excited to share this with you because I loved the way that this tray turned out and the different variations you can do with this project are endless.

This project does call for a wet saw to be used but if you find a piece of marble already cut to the size that you want you can skip to #3 in the Instructions below.

This piece measures 16"(L) x 12"(W).

You Got This! Lets get started.

Supplies

  • 1 piece marble tile measuring 12"(W) x 24"(L)
  • 2 gold bar cabinet knobs
  • 4 clear adhesive bumpers
  • Drill w/ diamond drill bit 3/16in and 5/16in
  • Wet saw

Instructions

  1. Using the wet saw cut the marble to 16"(L) x 12"(W). EASY DOES IT.
  2. Optional. After the initial cuts, I adjusted the saw and cut the marble at a 45 degree angle along all the edges. This was only done to soften the look of the edges so that they were not blunt.
  3. Lay the marble facedown and measure for the placement of the bar knobs.
  4. Mark the back 1 inch from the edge of the marble on both sides, checking for even placement.
  5. Drill with the 3/16in bit into the back of the marble all the way through.
  6. Then drill with the 5/16in bit to countersink the screw. BE CAREFUL not to drill all the way through the marble.
  7. Flip the marble over and place the bar knobs and screw into place. The screw should sit flush to the bottom of the marble thanks to your countersink hole.
  8. Place four clear adhesive bumper stickers to the four corners of your piece. This prevents the marble from rubbing against other services.

You are all done. That was fast!

Lessons

Ok my Pears. Working with marble is...well...challenging. Marble is a very delicate stone and doesn't take as much arm muscle as working with wood. I learned the hard way and actually broke two pieces while I was making this tray. Marble is not something that you can just glue back together so when its broke....it is BROKE. I ended up repurposing the pieces that I broke and made the salvageable pieces into coasters. I will tell you how I did that in a upcoming blog.

The standard screws that came with the bar knobs were too long for the tray and the knobs did not fit snug to the marble so I had to use a shorter screw which was a 3/4 in screw.

This Tray is HEAVY! Please be very careful with moving it as marble is fragile. Please keep out of reach of children as they may become injured if this tray falls on them.

I applied a marble sealer to the tray because I do NOT intend on putting food on it. As you may know sealers have chemicals and it is recommended that food not be in direct contact with the surface.

Of note.

If you are planning on displaying food on this tray do not use a sealer and be sure to wipe down the surface with warm soapy water immediately after use. Remember that marble stains so if any red wine, food dyes or heavily pigmented foods come in contact it will stain the surface.
