Marble Coasters

A set of Marble Coasters is a dual-purpose decor item that is aesthetically pleasing and practically used. These coasters can be placed in an office, living room, kitchen or bar. I chose a geometric shaped stand to display the coasters when they are not in use.

I visited the local home improvement store and selected a polished marble tile with hints of blue and gold in a 12"x24" size. When I find something that I like I tend to purchase a lot of it... I'm working on that. (deep breaths).

To be safe, I recommend purchasing more than one piece of marble for any hiccups or mishaps you may have. Remember, marble is somewhat delicate and can be easily chipped or broken.

The marble coasters that I made are square and measure 4". I was able to make 13 (to my liking) out of one 12"x24" piece. I applied a felt backing to add some softness and to prevent any scraps to other surfaces.

Overall, this is a simple and satisfying DIY project that only uses a few materials and renders the final product in a few hours.

Materials/Tools

  • Polished Marble Tile
  • Wet table saw
  • Peel and stick felt
  • Coaster Stand
  • Gold Spray Paint (for coaster stand)
  • X-ACTO knife

Instructions

On the back of the marble, measure out 4 inches from the edge and mark with a pencil. On the table of the saw there are measurements at the bottom. Measure out four inches and make sure this lines up with your markings. This will help with easy gliding and accurate cutting.

Once everything is lined up, put on your protective equipment and fire up your saw! Slowly and steadily glide the marble through the wet saw. Be careful not to rush, this may result in a jammed saw, broken marble or jagged edges.

Now that you have the first line cut, take that piece and measure 4 inches from the top edge to get a four inch square. Cut out the squares using the wet saw. Then repeat. Remember that the wet saw blade is about 1/8" thick so remeasure between cuts.

Optional: Once all the cuts were made I lifted the table on the wet saw to a 45 degree angle and cut the edges of the coasters to make a softer look.

When all the cuts are made set the coasters aside and let dry.

Once dry, placed the coaster on the adhesive felt and using a X-ACTO knife, cut the squares for the bottom of the coasters. After all felt squares are cut, peel and stick the adhesive felt to the bottom of the coasters.

I purchased a coaster stand from Amazon (see below) and spray painted it gold. Pick whatever coaster stand that you like and get creative with the colors in your space.

You are all done! Once you make these coasters you will be unstoppable! There will be all kinds of marble DIY projects that pop into your head! Trust me!. You go this. Leave and comment below if you tried this project and let me know how you did.
